NATURE OF WORK

An employee in this class performs a moderate to large variety of duties in installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures.  Work requires the interpretation of prepared sketches, diagrams, schematics, and blueprints.  Accepted practices perform work assignments.  Employees resolve most problems independently, except for those creating an unusual nature, in which a supervisor may be consulted.  Errors in work could cause serious consequences, such as loss of human life and facilities.  Employees receive limited supervision.

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Tests malfunctioning electrical systems and equipment.

 

Performs minor repairs to electrical systems and equipment.

 

Installs, maintains, alters, and repairs wiring, electrical devices, machinery, and equipment.

 

Measures, cuts, threads, bends, assembles, and installs conduit.

 

Draws wire through conduit and completes necessary splicing, soldering, and application of friction tape.

 

Installs and connects equipment to wiring systems.

 

Replaces damaged or broken wires and cables.

 

Replaces faulty electrical components.

 

Performs other related work as required.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina.  Must maintain a safe driving record.  Employees in this position must follow specific drug testing requirements, procedures, and consequences of positive alcohol or drug tests.

 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Must be physically able to operate various equipment and machinery, including core drills, cherry pickers, scaffolds, electrical tools, etc.  Must be physically able to use a motor vehicle.  Must exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 75 pounds of force frequently, and 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects.  Requires the ability to climb and maneuver on ladders, scaffolding, and in tight spaces.

 

Requires the ability to read work orders, logs, diagrams, blueprints, schematics, etc.  Requires the ability to prepare activity logs and reports according to prescribed formats. 

 

Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists, to interpret various instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.

 

Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.

 

Requires the ability to rapidly and accurately coordinate hands and eyes in hand tools.

 

 

 

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school, preferably supplemented by vocational training in the electrical field.  Considerable experience in performing most of the tasks associated with electrical work.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and materials used in electrical installation, maintenance, and repair work.

 

Skill in using and caring for tools and equipment necessary for electrical work.

 

Ability to locate and correct defects in electrical systems and equipment.

 

Ability to understand and work from blueprints, schematics, sketches, or pencil drawings.

 

Ability to follow oral or written instructions.
